Channeling The All-American Rejects

Wanna hear my dirty little secret?

I haven't been writing anything but blog posts and book reviews lately. Not only that, but I drift from self-loathing to just short of happiness because of it.

One reason behind these polar opposite feelings I've been having is the amount of stuff I've now had time to read: fiction, non-fiction, YA, MG, memoirs, best-sellers, the list goes on and on. I love it and my to-be-read pile is finally shrinking (a little).

Also, I'm a pantser but that doesn't mean I don't churn stuff over and over and over again in my head before I start writing it. I do that a lot. So I'm thinking that this small break is my brain chewing the cud of my current story so I won't get stuck in the middle (oh, who am I kidding?) as has happened before. Yeah, let's go with that.

In other news, I found the perfect birthday present for my daughter.

You can click for a better view, but it says "...Then Buffy staked Edward. The End."

I've transformed her into a rabid Buffy fan and I couldn't be happier. I've tried to shield her from how the actors look now. If she knew they were all my age, she may never watch it again.

So tell me blog buddies, have you ever taken an extended break from your WIP? How did it work out for you?

Have you ever found the perfect birthday/anniversary present for someone special?

I'm on a WiP break right now! I love how much time I have to read, too. :) That is probably the coolest shirt ever, hope your daughter loves it!

Buffy staked Edward - I love it!

I had a nice long break from my revisions...now I'm back into them. And I'm already being pretty slack. Argh.

When have I taken a break? When have I not?? My manuscripts get completed at about the same rate as continental drift. BUT after I'm done procrastinating here in Italy, I am totally going to work on that productivity thing...

Yes, taking breaks is often necessary for me to gain better perspective on the works I've created or are about to create.

If I take a break from my WIP it means I don't really care about it, so either it won't come back or it'll come back in the same form or it'll just suck.

The t-shirt is lovely! Yay for Buffy!!

I think for me, I need to be happy inside and out to write and if I'm not, the writing stops.

I don't believe in forcing yourself to write - but I guess some writers have to if they have deadlines to reach. For me though, I need to feel ok to write something readable. I hope that makes sense! Take care and have a good and restful wip break! x

I'm so glad I have plenty of company. Maybe we should all get together for cocktails while we are taking our breaks!

RM, I wish I had your dedication. I have abandoned a couple of projects in the middle and never returned so that's always in the back of my mind.

I wrote a ton quite a few months ago (yeah, like November). Then, revisions and rewrites and edits and...not much progress. I've now written 9k in about 2 weeks and I feel a lot better about it.

Yes, you do have plenty of company - me too. :)

I love that bird picture on the top of your post!

I've done the WIP break. It's good to give the subconscious a chance to work. When...WHEN I finish my WIP, I'm going to break for a while before I revise too.

I got this AWESOME idea at a conference for a birthday/anniversary present that I really do plan (I really do) to make for my husband and children. Start a journal for that person and write in it as often as possible for a year - then give it to them on their birthday or anniversary. Neat, huh?

Love the shirt, but you're talking to a Team Edward fan here. SO I can't love it too much. :)

CJ Duggan is a dear friend and I saw she follows you on twitter so I wandered on over. I love it here! I'm totally in a guilt phase as I spend more time blogging and networking, reading and being, than writing. I have a billion ideas and terrible stick-to-it-ness!
What made me want to follow, though, is the AWESOME t-shirt. I am so buying that!!!!!
